How a person feels about their own appearance can greatly impact one’s happiness as well as self-confidence. The Rivers Hospital in Hertfordshire is one of the venues where Mr Mckiernan sees patients who are interested in rhinoplasty or have concerns about the shape of their nose and want to know what can be done. Digital image manipulation software is a very useful tool to allow you to see what can be done, not to demonstrate the “perfect” nose as this might be unattainable because of previous trauma or your anatomy.

Mr Mckiernan understands that the decision to proceed with rhinoplasty is not easy and is not to be undertaken lightly. In spite of tremendous experience in rhinoplasty and rhinological surgery he realises that that it is not always possible to achieve the patient’s goals and he takes considerable trouble to advise patients of what can be realistically achieved and the attendant risks.

Patients are also seen who present sinus problems and other functional nasal problems.

Sinus Specialist Hertfordshire

Mr Mckiernan was appointed to Addenbrookes and the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trusts to undertake complex rhinology and facial plastic surgery procedures and as such his NHS practice mirrors his private practice.

He sees referrals from GP’s , provides second opinions for colleagues and also sees self-funding patients without a referral.

Glossary of terms:

Rhinoplasty: a surgical procedure undertaken to improve the shape of the nose in order to improve its appearance or function or both. The surgery commonly addresses asymmetry of the nasal tip, tip bulbosity, nasal bumps and “bent” noses.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: surgical treatment of sinusitis and nasal polyps using an endoscope and preserving as much healthy mucosa as possible and aiming to restore normal anatomy and sinus ventilation. Image guidance surgery and balloon sinuplasty are variants of endoscopic sinus surgery. The conditions treated include facial pain, recurrent sinusitis, nasal obstruction, nasal polyps and barotrauma.

Septoplasty: surgery to correct a deviated septum and improve the airway. Septoplasty may also be required to straighten the nose and re-support the tip.
